The simplest way would be if the tiers are also represented as a post category?

That may be a good idea yes. You mean in the post listings page in post admin, in the post rows right. But ‘Post category’ as in?
Yes that may be a good idea. There’s an upcoming premium plugin ‘Patron content manager’ from Codebard which addresses such advanced use cases. That may already handle this.
