Several Patrons can't login due to Patreon E-Mail "bug"?

Hello,

In the past month, I’ve had several Patrons who can not log in with the Patreon plugin due to some E-Mail issues. Sadly, there is not much info I have about this: There seem to be 2 different occurrences, but since both appeared at about the same time, I assume they are related.

  1. I have Patrons who are bothered at login about their E-Mail not being verified.
  2. And I have Patrons who actually can log into their account, but then can’t access (even though their Tier is correct and they should be able to access content).

I have also witnessed that email addresses are missing from several such accounts on my homepage. Now I know one guy changed his E-Mail, so for him the problem can originate from that, but I have like 10 such cases all of a sudden this month. Several of them long time patrons who could log in 2-3 weeks ago without a hitch.

About the E-Mail verification cases: with one guy, I went down the rabbit hole and told him that he probably “just needs to verify his E-Mail”. But according to him, he was unable to do so, and even contacted Patreon support, who did not manage to help him, as it seems.

One user also mentioned that he and some other users have the same problem for other pages as well.

Now, if there were only 1 or 2 cases, I would expect user error, but with several of these cases plopping up at the same time → there seems to be something fishy going on right now. Probably related to Patreon or the plugin handling E-Mail addresses?

I know my input here is rather thin to track down a bug, but maybe somebody else has had a similar experience in the past month, and the bug is already known?

Kind regards,

Hexxet

I’ve had a number of these issues in the last 48 hours. Many of these are folk who have supported me for some time. I’ve logged an issue with creator support.

We’ve been having this EXACT issue on our platform too!
Any luck with solutions?

One of our patrons was able to work around this by creating a password. Here’s what I mean -
They had logged on to Patreon using Facebook and had never created a Patreon password.

  • They created a username and password for Patreon
  • Deleted patreon cookies and data
  • Chose to login with username
  • Went to settings and created a password
  • confirmed password
  • Verified email
and boom, everything just worked then

@codebard Do you think user accounts without a password are being treated as unverified emails in the OAuth2 flow?

Same issue here! Happens multiple times since yesterday for our users.

same with me @codebard help. everyone tag @codebard

I’m experiencing the same issue.
I also made a post: Issue with Patron Login on WordPress Website

Hi all,

We’ve reverted the change that caused this so things should be working as expected now. The change was limited to only users with unverified emails.

In the future, we’ll be requiring email verification but will release a new plugin version when doing so with guidance on what to expect.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

Some users on our site are running into the same issue, even though their email is already verified.

They can’t log in with 2FA, and this started happening last Friday. The error looks like this:

{"error":"access_denied","error_description":"Please verify your email address through Patreon before logging in."}

Thanks for the update!

I have the same issue on my site. For new patrons, it seemed to resolve if they verified the email Patreon sends on signup. However, several long-term patrons also received this error despite being able to connect to the website previously.

I have now received feedback from one patron who previously ran into this bug, and the Patreon login via the plugin works for him, now again. So, I guess this issue is fixed. Thanks!
